In a crackdown on illegal immigrants, the Dehradun police have arrested a 28-year-old Bangladeshi woman who had been living in the city under a false identity. Babli Begum, who hails from Bangladesh's Gaybanda district, was caught during Operation Kalnemi, a campaign against individuals living with fake identities. Police claim that Begum had entered India during the COVID-19 pandemic and settled in Dehradun in 2021. She allegedly obtained fake Indian documents in the name of Bhoomi Sharma, including an Aadhaar card, voter ID, and ration card, after marrying a local man in 2022. The police have also recovered a Bangladeshi identity card in Begum's name, along with the fake Indian documents. A case has been registered against her for living illegally in India by creating fake documents. The police are investigating those who helped Begum create the fake documents and will take strict action against them. In a related incident, another Bangladeshi woman, Bobby Khatun (41), was detained from the Patel Nagar area. She had allegedly entered India in 2023 and been living illegally in Dehradun, earning a living through manual labor. The police are deporting her to Bangladesh as per the rules. This operation has led to the arrest of 17 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Dehradun, with eight being sent to jail and nine deported to Bangladesh.
