A harrowing incident unfolded at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday when an Ariana Afghan Airlines aircraft landed on the wrong runway. The A310 aircraft, flight FG-311 from Kabul, received clearance from Air Traffic Control (ATC) to land on runway 29L. However, the pilots, led by Captain Abdul Maroof Sikandari, mistakenly landed on the adjacent runway 29R. According to officials, the crew has stated that the Instrument Landing System (ILS) malfunctioned during the final approach, and poor visibility contributed to the error. The pilots only realized their mistake after vacating the runway, when air traffic control informed them of the incorrect landing. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident, seeking written statements from the flight crew. Preliminary findings suggest that air traffic control was not at fault, and the pilots were instructed to land on the correct runway. The Delhi airport, which manages over 1,200 flights daily, operates four runways. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and precision in air traffic operations. The regulator is reviewing the sequence of events to understand how the misalignment occurred during the final approach.
