Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is urging residents to make a switch to public transport in a bid to tackle the city's air pollution crisis. Speaking about the issue on Wednesday, Gupta highlighted the significant contribution of vehicles and transportation to the city's pollution problem. She emphasized that the Delhi metro and other public transport modes play a crucial role in reducing pollution. Gupta's appeal comes as the Delhi government has implemented 50% mandatory work-from-home for employees in both government and private organizations from Thursday. This move is part of emergency pollution-control measures under GRAP III and IV. The Delhi government is also providing ₹10,000 compensation to construction workers who have lost work due to the restrictions. However, essential services such as hospitals, emergency response units, fire services, and departments directly involved in pollution control will not be covered under this scheme. Gupta's message to citizens is clear: 'If we want Delhi to be breathable, we have to use public transportation.' The city's massive population and high number of vehicles on the roads are significant contributors to the pollution problem. Gupta is urging people to make a conscious decision to use carpool, public transport, or walk instead of relying on personal vehicles. By working together, Delhi can take a step towards a cleaner and healthier environment.
