A Delhi court has ordered charges to be framed against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and six others in connection with the alleged Chinese Visa scam case. The court found sufficient evidence to support charges of criminal conspiracy and bribery against Karti, who is accused of accepting a ₹50 lakh bribe to facilitate visas for 263 Chinese nationals in 2011. Special judge Dig Vinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Court made the ruling after considering the CBI's charge sheet, which alleged that Karti used his influence as the son of then Union home minister P Chidambaram to facilitate the visas in violation of the ceiling imposed on work permits for foreign nationals. The court also cited the statement of an approver, who claimed that Karti guided him to disclose his requirements to the accused mastermind, S Bhaskaraman, and that Bhaskaraman then demanded and received the bribe. The court stated that prima facie, sufficient material exists to frame charges against Karti for the offences of criminal conspiracy and sections 8 and 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The matter is listed for January 16 for the prosecution's evidence. Karti is represented by senior advocate Sidharth Kuthra. The CBI had filed the charge sheet against Karti and others in October 2024, alleging that they were involved in bribery in facilitating visas for Chinese nationals for a power company in 2011.
