The Delhi High Court has directed the Tihar Jail authorities to provide immediate and suitable medical treatment to separatist leader Yasin Malik, who is serving a life sentence for a terror-related offense. Malik, a cardiac patient, has been claiming to be in a life-threatening condition, suffering from serious cardiac and kidney ailments. The court noted that while the jail report does not indicate a life-threatening situation, it ordered the authorities to provide medical care as per Malik's condition. If necessary, the treatment should be provided at a hospital with the required facilities, such as AIIMS in Delhi or a super-speciality hospital in Srinagar. Malik's counsel argued that the jail lacks a cardiologist, and he requires urgent medical attention. The government counsel countered that Malik is a high-risk prisoner and has previously resorted to hunger strikes, but the court focused on ensuring his immediate medical needs are met. Malik was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2022, and his case is currently under appeal for a possible death penalty.
