The Delhi High Court has stepped in to safeguard Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan's personality rights by issuing a restraining order against unauthorized use of his name, image, and voice for commercial purposes. The court's decision comes after Devgan's legal team alleged that his persona was being misused to promote paid appearances, sell merchandise, and create deepfake images. In a recent hearing, the court directed the removal of deepfakes, including those featuring the actor in obscene content with other celebrities. However, the court declined to order the takedown of other content, such as fan pages, citing the need to balance the actor's rights with the freedom of his fans. This is the latest in a series of cases where the Delhi High Court has protected the personality and publicity rights of Indian celebrities. In recent years, the court has safeguarded the rights of actors Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Hrithik Roshan, and the Bachchan family. The court's decision highlights the growing concern over the misuse of celebrities' images and personas for commercial gain. As the use of deepfake technology and social media continues to rise, the need for protection of personality rights has become increasingly important.
