Delhi's air quality has reached a critical point as winter smog takes hold. On Sunday, the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was a staggering 430, firmly placing it in the 'severe' category. Several areas, including Wazirpur and Bawana, are facing extremely hazardous air conditions, with AQI levels above 435 and 450, respectively. The situation is equally dire in the wider National Capital Region (NCR). Noida is hovering close to the 'severe' threshold, while Greater Noida and Ghaziabad are experiencing particularly poor air quality, with AQIs of 380 and 426, respectively. The elevated AQI levels are due to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and poor visibility, posing significant health risks to those outdoors. To combat the pollution surge, the region remains under Stage 3 restrictions, with the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) advising 50% on-site staffing for private offices and remote work for the rest. The Delhi government is taking proactive measures, with Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirming that the government is monitoring the situation around the clock. Staggered timings have been introduced for both MCD and GNCTD offices to reduce peak traffic emissions, and schools have been instructed not to conduct any sports or outdoor physical activities. As the situation continues to deteriorate, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their health and well-being.
