In a move to tackle hazardous air quality in Delhi-NCR, the Centre has ordered a crackdown on highly polluting industries that fail to meet a December 31 deadline. The deadline is for installing real-time emission monitoring systems and air pollution control devices. The Union Environment Minister, Bhupender Yadav, chaired a review meeting where it was decided that Delhi-NCR states should finalize their 2026 air pollution control plans this month. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, 2,254 highly polluting industries in the region have yet to install and connect their Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) to the CPCB server. These industries, mainly in the food, textile, and metal sectors, have been warned of strict action, including closure, if they do not meet the deadline. In addition to installing OCEMS, industries have been asked to install air pollution control devices by December 31. The Commission for Air Quality Management has also been directed to prepare an action plan to curb stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana during the next paddy harvesting season. To address vehicular pollution, the CAQM will set up an expert committee. Meanwhile, 62 congestion-linked pollution hotspots have been identified in Delhi, and authorities have been asked to take immediate action. Cities adjoining Delhi have also been directed to address similar issues.
