In a major crackdown, Delhi Police have seized 2.7 lakh counterfeit cigarette sticks and arrested two men for selling and distributing these illicit products. Ramjeet alias Vijay (33) and Ankit (34) were taken into custody after a raid on a shop in the Lahori Gate area, where police found a cache of fake cigarettes bearing the names of national and international brands. According to officials, the police action was triggered by a tip-off about the circulation of 'fake' cigarettes in the Lahori Gate area. The seized cigarettes lack mandatory health warnings and price tags, as required under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). This is not the first time Delhi Police have targeted counterfeit tobacco products. Earlier this year, they busted a godown storing banned tobacco products and arrested two men involved in its distribution. The trade of counterfeit products has resulted in significant revenue losses for both cigarette manufacturers and the government. The raids were part of a larger campaign by the Delhi Police's Operations Cell in South West District to curb the supply of illicit liquor and tobacco products in the Capital. The police are now investigating the supply chain of these counterfeit products and identifying the manufacturers and distributors involved.
