As Delhi grapples with its worst air pollution crisis, DMK MP P Wilson has sounded the alarm, terming the national capital a 'gas chamber.' In a scathing critique, Wilson urged the government to reconsider holding the winter session of Parliament during the peak smog period. Wilson, participating in a debate on a resolution to extend the Water Amendment Act, 2024, to Manipur, emphasized that pollution is no longer just a concern, but a 'national emergency.' He highlighted the alarming fact that Delhi has failed to meet the World Health Organization's safe air quality standards in 2025, with citizens losing over eight years of life expectancy due to pollution. The MP pointed out that while crop residue burning in neighboring states is a significant contributor, vehicular emissions are the 'single largest culprit.' He attributed this to 'over-centralization' and suggested that the government could decentralize its operations by establishing regional benches of the Supreme Court and relocating ministries to other states. Wilson suggested that the government could achieve the constitutional requirement for the number of parliamentary sessions by working in other sessions, avoiding the winter session. He proposed that Parliament's work could be spread across the country, allowing Delhi to breathe cleaner air. The air quality in Delhi remained in the 'very poor' category on Wednesday, with an AQI reading of 335, the second consecutive day of 'very poor' AQI. Wilson's call to action has sparked a renewed debate on the need for a smog-proof Parliament session in the national capital.
