In a shocking case of insurance fraud, two Delhi-based traders were arrested in Hapur after they attempted to cremate a mannequin to claim ₹50 lakh in insurance money. The accused, Kamal Somani and Ashish Khurana, had devised an elaborate scheme to repay a debt of ₹50 lakh by faking the death of Somani's employee's brother, Anshul. According to police, Somani had taken out a ₹50 lakh Tata AIA insurance policy in Anshul's name nearly a year ago, paying premiums regularly. The plan was to send Anshul out of town, pass the mannequin off as his body, and then claim the insurance payout. However, their scheme was foiled when a municipal employee spotted the mannequin on the pyre and alerted the authorities. A police team rushed to the spot and recovered the car of the accused along with three mannequins. During interrogation, Somani confessed to the crime and police used his phone to video call Anshul, who was in Prayagraj, to confirm that he had no knowledge of the staged death. Circle Officer Stuti Singh described the case as a clear instance of insurance fraud. "An investigation is underway, and efforts are on to trace the absconding suspects," she said. This brazen attempt to deceive the insurance company and exploit the system has left many questioning the loopholes in the system that allowed such a scheme to unfold. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how this case will impact the insurance industry and the measures that will be taken to prevent similar scams in the future.
