Ahmedabad police took a tough stance on liquor consumption and drunk driving on New Year's Eve, arresting 238 individuals for violating the Gujarat Prohibition Act. The city police registered 246 liquor-related cases, with 123 arrests for consuming liquor, 54 for possessing Indian-Made Foreign Liquor, and 61 for drunk driving. Under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949, the sale, purchase, possession, transport, and consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited. However, certain residents and visitors can obtain permits for limited consumption. The police deployed a significant force, including 9,040 personnel, to maintain law and order. They also set up Quick Response Teams, breath analysers, and speed gun cameras to catch violators. A total of 107 vehicles were seized for other traffic violations. The police statement revealed that large crowds gathered at popular spots like Sabarmati Riverfront and CG Road to celebrate the New Year, despite the prohibition in place. The authorities are likely to continue their crackdown on liquor-related offenses in the coming days.
