In a major enforcement drive on New Year's Eve, Ahmedabad City Police detained 238 individuals for various alcohol-related offenses, officials announced on Thursday. Gujarat, being a dry state under the 1949 Gujarat Prohibition Act, strictly prohibits the manufacture, sale, purchase, possession, transport, and consumption of alcohol, with penalties ranging from fines to up to ten years in prison. While exemptions exist for business purposes in GIFT City and for residents and visitors with permits, the ban applies across most of the state, including Ahmedabad. On December 31, the police registered 246 cases related to alcohol, including 123 for consumption, 54 for possession of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor, and 69 for drunk driving. A total of 9,040 personnel were deployed, including 5,500 frontline officers, to maintain law and order. Large crowds gathered at popular spots like Sabarmati Riverfront, Sardar Patel Ring Road, and CG Road, and the police took extensive measures to ensure public safety. These included deploying Quick Response Teams, breath analysers, speed gun cameras, and emergency response vehicles. The operations focused on road safety and law enforcement throughout the night, resulting in the seizure of 107 vehicles for other traffic violations.
