A devastating collision between a train and a herd of wild elephants in Assam's Hojai district has claimed the lives of seven elephants, including three adults and four calves, while injuring one calf. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the DN-Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express derailed the engine and five coaches after ramming into the elephants in the Kampur area. The accident took place at 2:17 am in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under the Lumding division, approximately 126 km from Guwahati. Miraculously, no passengers were injured in the incident. Relief trains and officials from the divisional headquarters have arrived at the site to assist in the situation. Passengers from the affected coaches have been temporarily accommodated in other coaches, while the derailed train has been detached and is on its way to Guwahati for further assistance. Additional coaches will be added to the train once it reaches Guwahati, allowing the passengers to continue their journey. The incident has sparked concerns about the coordination between the railways and wildlife departments, with experts calling for better sharing of elephant movement information to prevent such accidents. The concerned departments have activated helpline numbers at Guwahati railway station for assistance.
