In a response to a question in parliament, the Union government has clarified that vehicles using 20% ethanol blended petrol (E20) have shown no significant variations in performance or adverse impacts on components. This assurance comes from the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, which administers the Ethanol Blending Programme. The findings are based on studies conducted by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, and Automotive Research Association of India. The statement was made in the wake of concerns raised by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O' Brien, who asked about the compatibility of vehicles sold between 2011 and 2025 with E20 fuel. The minister also highlighted the benefits of ethanol-blended fuels, citing lower greenhouse gas emissions and higher-octane numbers. However, the government has ruled out creating a compensation fund for any potential damages caused by E20 fuel. It is worth noting that vehicles sold before April 1, 2023, were only compatible with E10 fuel, a 10% ethanol blend. The government's response aims to alleviate concerns and provide clarity on the use of E20 fuel in the country.
