A former Assistant Commissioner of GST has been sentenced to five years in prison for demanding a staggering ₹12 crore bribe from a businessman to settle a matter with the Enforcement Directorate. The court found Ashok Nayak guilty of corruption and conspiracy, and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh. According to the complaint, Nayak demanded 25-30% of the bribe be paid within two days to avoid arrest. He even claimed to have influence with a senior bureaucrat in the Prime Minister's Office. The Anti-Corruption Bureau laid a trap and arrested Nayak while he accepted the first installment of ₹1.25 crore. The court held that the evidence was clear, and Nayak's actions as a public servant were unacceptable. Despite considering his age and health, the court decided on simple imprisonment instead of rigorous imprisonment.
