In a tragic incident, a tiger died after being struck by a train while chasing its prey in Madhya Pradesh's Ratapani Tiger Reserve. The collision occurred on Tuesday night near the Budhni-Midghat railway track, which has been a hotspot for wildlife fatalities in the region. According to officials, the tiger was dragged for 25 feet by the train's engine before coming to a stop. The big cat's body was later disposed of after an autopsy in the presence of Chief Conservator of Forests Ashok Kumar. This is the second tiger death in the area within a week and the fifth in the Ratapani reserve over the past year. The Budhni-Midghat railway track has claimed the lives of numerous wild animals, including 10 tigers, 15 leopards, and two bears in the past decade. Madhya Pradesh is home to several tiger reserves, including Ratapani, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Satpura, Pench, and Panna. The state has the highest number of tigers in the country, with 785 reported in the 'Status of Tigers: Co-predators & Prey in India-2022' report. The incident highlights the need for increased safety measures to protect wildlife along the railway tracks.
