A devastating fire at a night shelter in Delhi's Vasant Vihar has claimed the life of 18-year-old Arjun, who was trying to rescue his phone. Arjun, the only son of a sanitation worker, had bought the phone with his hard-earned money two months ago. He was working at a nearby cinema hall to support his father and was planning to get married soon. According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out in the early hours of Monday at the shelter operated by SPYM NGO, where seven people were residing at the time. Arjun's aunt, Santoshi, said that he had finished two shifts and was planning to sleep with his father, but went to the shelter instead. In a desperate attempt to retrieve his phone, Arjun went back inside and never returned. The locals described Arjun as a hardworking and obedient boy who was very polite and never got into trouble. The community tried to control the blaze before the fire brigade or police arrived, but the fire spread rapidly due to inflammable materials inside. Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire was likely caused by a short circuit. Arjun's family is devastated by the loss, with his father shattered and his aunt saying that she hasn't eaten since his death. The family had started saving for Arjun's marriage, and his father worked hard to raise him alone after his mother's death when he was just eight months old. The incident highlights the struggles faced by the residents of the shelter, who stay there to escape Delhi's harsh winter. The caretaker of the shelter did not know how to operate the fire extinguisher due to lack of training, which further exacerbated the situation. The police are investigating the incident and have promised to take necessary action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
