Bollywood filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari were sent to judicial custody on Tuesday, accused of a ₹30 crore fraud case. The couple had been in police custody for seven days, but their request for interim bail on medical grounds was denied. They will now be held at the Central Jail in Udaipur. The case against the couple centers around a biopic deal gone sour. In April 2024, a Udaipur-based doctor, Dr Ajay Murdia, approached Bhatt with a proposal to produce a film about his late wife. Bhatt allegedly promised Murdia a ₹200 crore profit in exchange for producing a total of four films, including the biopic. However, the deal took a turn for the worse when Murdia discovered that the couple had created fake documents, including bills and salary vouchers, to siphon off ₹30 crore from his account. An FIR was registered against the couple and six others in May 2024, and they were subsequently arrested from Mumbai last Sunday. The police investigation revealed that the couple had produced only the first two films, leaving the remaining two unmade. The case has raised questions about the couple's business practices and the allegations of cheating and financial irregularities. As the investigation continues, the fate of the remaining two films and the ₹30 crore remains uncertain.
