As the United Nations celebrates its 80th anniversary, it's a pivotal moment to reflect on the future of humanity. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed the UN's role in preventing a third world war, underscoring the importance of global cooperation. However, significant challenges loom ahead, requiring immediate attention. Strengthening the rule of law, democracy, and justice institutions is crucial. The erosion of trust in these pillars worldwide has been a major concern. India, with its robust democratic framework and independent judiciary, is a shining example of democratic governance. Yet, democracy and development can go hand-in-hand, making India a global leader in promoting sustainable growth. Climate change is an existential threat, demanding concerted efforts to build climate resilience and prioritize sustainable development. India's low per capita CO2 emissions make it an ideal model for promoting sustainable growth, emphasizing the need for climate finance, technology transfer, and green technologies. The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) presents an opportunity to harness technology for the common good. India's leadership in democratizing technology and providing access to digital public infrastructure positions it to shape the global AI discourse, emphasizing ethical AI for development, democratization, and access. A skills crisis looms, with the Global South disproportionately affected. Education institutions must focus on future-readiness, incorporating digital adaptability, interdisciplinary education, and experiential learning. India's demography demands that universities and colleges reinvent curricula to meet employer demands and ensure lifelong learning capability. Lastly, addressing inequality, caregiving, and the new social contract is essential. The world needs to develop a new social contract that recognizes the urgent need to address institutionalized forms of inequalities. The colonial legacy of wealth extraction continues to impact the Global South, and the time for reversal is now. Transforming tomorrow requires a collective effort to tackle these complex, interconnected challenges. By working together, we can build a resilient humanity for the future. C. Raj Kumar, founding vice chancellor of OP Jindal Global University, emphasizes the need for a new social contract, one that prioritizes fairness, justice, and equality.
