Imphal, India - Tensions ran high in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Tuesday night as unidentified miscreants opened fire in the area, prompting widespread condemnation from local politicians and civil society organisations. The incident occurred around 9 pm near Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai areas, bordering Churachandpur district. Although no one was injured, the situation remained tense, with hundreds of displaced people, mostly women and children, fleeing their homes once again. The National Peoples' Party (NPP) and other local groups have urged the government to take immediate action against those responsible for the violence. 'This provocative and cruel act must not be tolerated,' said NPP MLA Mayanglambam Rameshwar. 'We demand that the government ensures there are no intelligence lapses that could lead to disturbance of peace.' The Cordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, an umbrella body of Meitei groups, also condemned the incident, calling for the arrest of 'armed militants involved in terrorising civilians.' The Kuki Zo Council, meanwhile, expressed concern over the resettlement of internally displaced persons in sensitive areas, which it believes 'invites renewed conflict.' The recent firing incident is the latest in a series of clashes between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups, which has claimed over 260 lives and left thousands homeless since May 2023. Manipur has been under President's rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of then Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9. As markets and shops in Moirang town and New Checkon area remained closed in protest, women protesters took to the streets, demanding immediate action against those responsible for the violence. The situation in Bishnupur district remains tense, with the government yet to make any official statement on the incident.
