New Delhi: In an exclusive interview with HT, German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann emphasized Germany's support for a closer defense and security partnership between India and the European Union (EU) ahead of their January summit. Ackermann also highlighted the growing security ties between New Delhi and Berlin, including the submarine deal nearing completion. As the US reevaluates its security commitments to Europe, Germany sees a growing need for European countries to take responsibility for their own defense. Ackermann noted that the US expects Europe to spend more on its own security, with many countries, including Germany, committing to spend up to 5% of their GDP on defense. The upcoming India-EU Summit is crucial, with two key areas of focus: a free trade agreement (FTA) and a new security and defense partnership. Ackermann expressed confidence that the summit will yield significant outcomes, including the FTA, which will boost business and economic ties between India and Europe. Germany's defense cooperation with India is also on the rise, with the two countries negotiating a submarine deal. Ackermann emphasized that Europe considers India a strong partner and ally in maintaining the international rules-based order. The German Chancellor's planned visit next year is expected to be a significant event, with potential outcomes including the submarine deal and further cooperation in the defense industry. Germany is keen to strengthen its security and defense partnership with India, particularly in the context of rearming Europe. In trade, Germany's business delegation, which accompanies the Chancellor's visit, aims to increase the current $50 billion trade between the two countries. Ackermann noted that German companies are eager to invest in India, with many setting up branches in the country. However, Ackermann emphasized the need for India to ensure predictability and security of investments, recommending that the country conclude an investment protection agreement. Germany also acknowledges India's security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region and encourages closer contacts with its neighbors, including China. The German ambassador highlighted the importance of people-to-people ties, citing the success story of the Indian diaspora in Germany. With over 300,000 Indians living in Germany, their monthly salary is higher than the average German salary, and they contribute significantly to the country's economy. However, Ackermann also acknowledged the challenges faced by some Indians in Germany, including exploitation by unscrupulous agents and the risk of living in precarious circumstances. He emphasized the need for caution and advised Indians to research thoroughly and seek advice before moving to Germany. Overall, Germany is committed to strengthening its ties with India, particularly in defense and security, trade, and people-to-people exchanges. The upcoming India-EU Summit and the German Chancellor's visit offer opportunities for significant cooperation and growth in these areas.
