A recent audit conducted by IIT Ropar's Centre of Research for Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization (CREED) has found that Goa's small and medium industries can significantly reduce their carbon footprint. The audit, which covered around 300 units, identified areas of operational wastage and provided detailed reports outlining corrective measures, technology upgrades, and process optimisations. According to CREED, the targeted interventions can help MSMEs become more cost-efficient, resource-conscious, and future-ready. The response from Goa's MSMEs has been encouraging, with many units able to identify high-impact, low-investment improvements within days of the assessments. If implemented, the proposed energy efficiency measures could lead to a reduction of 8,000-10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. To put this into perspective, this would be equivalent to the emissions from 1,600 to 2,000 passenger cars or the CO2 absorption capacity of planting 360,000 to 450,000 mature trees. The audits, conducted in partnership with the state's directorate of industries, trade and commerce, aim to address long-standing challenges such as excessive fuel and electricity consumption, inefficient water management, and outdated machinery. CREED has already delivered similar solutions in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana, with initiatives proposing over 49,000 tonnes of annual CO2 reductions in Punjab alone.
