Golden Temple Ablution Row: Devotion vs Disrespect - A Complex Issue in Amritsar

A viral video has sparked controversy in Amritsar's Golden Temple, with many questioning a Muslim man's use of the holy sarovar water for ablution. While some see it as disrespect to the Sikh holy site, others view it as a genuine attempt at devotion, albeit misguided. The man, seen in the video, purportedly uses the stagnant water for wazu, a pre-prayer cleansing ritual in Islam. However, the Sikh code of conduct, known as maryada, specifies that the sarovar water is only for ceremonial dips and that separate provisions are made for hand and foot washing before entering the gurdwara. Kulwant Singh Manan, chief secretary of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, acknowledges that people from other faiths may not always be aware of the maryada. He has promised an investigation into the incident, citing previous meetings to address similar issues. The Golden Temple has become a hub for social media influencers and tourists, with some treating it as a 'tourist spot' rather than a sacred site. The SGPC has taken note of this trend, highlighting the need for respect and adherence to the Sikh code of conduct.
