In a bid to curb the misuse of physical Aadhaar cards and enhance offline verification, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to launch a new app. The cutting-edge technology aims to provide Aadhaar holders with a secure and convenient way to share their electronic IDs and make updates directly from their mobile devices. The new app, which will merge with the existing mAadhaar app, is designed to address the issue of photocopying Aadhaar cards, which can be tampered with and misused. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar explained that the electronic version is meant to provide a safer alternative, similar to how mobile phones facilitate UPI payments. Key features of the new app include electronic ID sharing, offline face verification, and easier address and mobile number updates. Kumar emphasized that the physical Aadhaar card is not being phased out and that the electronic version is optional, meant to cater to those with smartphones. The app is currently in its final testing stage and is expected to be launched soon, with UIDAI anticipating a gradual adoption over time.
