In a shocking discovery, police in Maharashtra's Jalna district have cracked down on an illicit foetal sex determination and abortion operation being run from a cattle shed. The raid, conducted on Wednesday, led to the arrest of two individuals, including the owner of a local pathology lab and a Class 12 pass youth. Neither of the arrested individuals holds a medical degree, according to police. The clandestine operation, which had been running for six months, was discovered by a team of police and health officials after receiving a tip-off. The premises, located in a field near a village school, were found to be equipped with medical testing material, a portable machine, abortion pills, and mobile phones. Three women were also found waiting for tests at the time of the raid. The main suspect, Satish Sonawane, has a history of similar offenses, with cases registered against him in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, and Jalna districts. His accomplice, Keshav Gawande, owner of the Tejas Pathology Lab, was also taken into custody. This latest bust comes after a similar operation in July 2024, where 28 individuals, including doctors, were arrested from Jalna and Buldhana districts for running an illegal abortion centre in the same tehsil.
