Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump have instructed officials to expedite discussions on a bilateral trade agreement. The US Trade Representative will visit India next week for further talks.
The trade deal was a key issue discussed during the meeting between Modi and Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian. The two leaders had not met in 16 months due to a lack of travel by both sides.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that all important issues were discussed, including the bilateral trade agreement, and that officials have been instructed to move forward quickly.
The trade deal has created uncertainty over the past year, and it is essential to achieve certainty on these issues, Misri added.
The meeting between Modi and Trump aimed to restore normalcy to the bilateral relationship, which was strained last year after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports.
Misri noted that there are ups and downs in bilateral relations, and the leaders have to deal with developments. He also stated that India is ready to work with all parties to ensure a lasting peace in West Asia.
