India and the United States have made significant headway in their comprehensive global strategic partnership, despite ongoing trade tensions. The two nations held high-level foreign office consultations in New Delhi, co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker. As part of the discussions, the two sides focused on cooperation in key areas, including trade, investment, defence, and the Trust (Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technology) initiative. Hooker's visit aimed to support India's long-term goals and enhance US security, jobs, and competitiveness. The US has been facing criticism for its trade and tariff policies, with President Donald Trump imposing 50% tariffs on Indian goods, including a 25% punitive levy on Russian oil purchases. However, the bilateral consultations provided an opportunity for a comprehensive review of the partnership, with both sides discussing regional and global developments. The two nations also underscored their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. They welcomed the steady progress in existing dialogue mechanisms and agreed to accelerate the implementation of the 'Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology (COMPACT) for the 21st Century' initiative. Hooker emphasized the US's aim to deepen cooperation in defence, energy, technology, space, and trusted supply chains. The US embassy spokesperson said the meeting was an opportunity to translate President Trump and Prime Minister Modi's vision into concrete progress, enhancing US security, jobs, and competitiveness while supporting India's long-term goals. The visit comes amid a push to conclude a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial multi-sectoral bilateral trade agreement. A new US deputy trade representative, Rick Switzer, will also visit India next week for a familiarisation visit, meeting senior Indian officials to discuss the agreement. In Bengaluru, Hooker will visit the Indian Space Research Organisation and meet representatives from the space, energy, and technology sectors to promote innovation and explore opportunities for expanded cooperation. The visit marks a significant step towards deepening economic and commercial ties between the two nations.
