New Delhi: India's defence ministry has signed a significant deal worth ₹7,995 crore with the United States to provide long-term sustainment support for the Indian Navy's fleet of advanced MH-60R helicopters. The five-year agreement, inked under the US Foreign Military Sales programme, will enable the Navy to enhance the operational availability and maintainability of its technologically advanced helicopters. The Indian Navy had ordered 24 MH-60R helicopters in 2020 to modernise its ageing naval fleet, with 15 aircraft already delivered and the remaining set to arrive next year. The sustainment support package includes provisioning of spare parts, training, and technical support, as well as the establishment of intermediate-level repair facilities in India. The defence ministry has hailed the agreement as a step towards achieving 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India), enabling the development of indigenous products and services through MSMEs and Indian firms. The MH-60R helicopters, equipped with advanced precision weapons and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, will be able to operate from dispersed locations and ships, ensuring optimal performance during all their primary and secondary missions. The deal is seen as a significant boost to the Indian Navy's capabilities, with the helicopters set to play a crucial role in its future operations. With this long-term support agreement in place, the Navy can focus on leveraging its advanced helicopters to enhance maritime security and protect India's interests in the region.
