In a significant move, India, Australia, and Canada have announced a trilateral technology and innovation partnership during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The partnership aims to strengthen cooperation in emerging technologies, clean energy, and building resilient supply chains, as stated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the meeting. The Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership will facilitate collaboration among democratic partners across three continents and three oceans, driving growth in emerging technologies, clean energy, and artificial intelligence (AI). The partnership will also support the diversification of supply chains, focusing on green energy innovation and critical minerals. According to a joint statement, the three countries will strengthen their ambition in cooperation on critical and emerging technologies, complementing existing bilateral initiatives. The partnership will draw on the unique strengths of each country and emphasize green energy innovation and resilient supply chains. The next step will be a meeting of officials in the first quarter of 2026 to take the initiative forward. The partnership is expected to drive further diversification of supply chains towards a secure, sustainable, and resilient future. This announcement marks another significant step in the revival of relations between India and Canada, following the assumption of charge by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney this year. Carney is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Modi on Sunday to discuss the progress made in resetting ties. Modi also held bilateral meetings with Australian Prime Minister Antony Albanese and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the summit, discussing ways to deepen cooperation across various areas, including defense and security, trade, and energy. The trilateral partnership is a testament to the growing global cooperation in emerging technologies and clean energy, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the global economy and environment.
