New Delhi, India - The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of higher-than-normal heatwave days in northern parts of the Indo-Gangetic plains, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and adjoining areas this year.

According to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in climatologically prone areas, including Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.

The IMD has taken measures to help the vulnerable population, including setting up WhatsApp groups to circulate information among outdoor workers and display boards indicating heat occurrence and expected actions.

Higher temperatures are expected every year during April and May, and the IMD provides heatwave outlook one season in advance, followed by an extended range outlook valid for the next four weeks every Thursday.
