India has reached a new milestone with over 72,000 foreign students from 200 countries currently studying in the country. This achievement was revealed in the Rajya Sabha by the Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar. The government has sanctioned ₹6,198.99 crore for eight public institutions under the World Class Institutions scheme, which grants the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE) to top institutions. This scheme has been successful in elevating India's higher education institutions, with 54 institutions now featured in the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2026, a significant increase from 11 in 2014-15. The National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, has played a crucial role in improving the quality of education in Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), leading to a significant rise in their performance in international rankings. The number of Indian HEIs in the QS WUR has doubled in the past five years, from 27 in 2021 to 54, showcasing India's growing presence in the global education landscape.
