In a significant blow to international drug trafficking, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has intercepted a massive consignment of high-grade heroin worth ₹12.5 crore in Assam. The operation, carried out in collaboration with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Assam Police, involved tracking a consignment transported through riverine routes from Myanmar to evade security checks. According to NCB officials, the heroin was concealed inside 530 soap cases and hidden beneath bamboo layers on a motorboat intercepted on the Barak river near Silchar on December 1, 2025. The two individuals arrested in connection with the case will be produced before the court along with the seized contraband. The operation highlights a growing trend of traffickers using riverine routes to bypass urban surveillance and security camps. The NCB has intensified coordination among drug enforcement agencies, state police, and border guarding forces to improve the overall enforcement ecosystem in the region. The success of this operation is seen as a significant breakthrough against cross-border narcotics smuggling, dismantling an international drug trafficking network operating across Myanmar, Manipur, and Assam. The NCB has also conducted joint coordination committee meetings with state governments to prevent cases of drug trafficking in the region.
