Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed outrage over the treatment of a local woman, Prema Wangjom Thongdok, at Shanghai Pudong Airport on November 21. Thongdok, who holds a valid Indian passport, was subjected to racial mockery and humiliation by Chinese immigration authorities after they declared her passport invalid, claiming Arunachal Pradesh was part of Chinese territory. Thongdok, a resident of the United Kingdom, was on her way to Japan for a vacation when she was detained for over 18 hours. Despite holding a valid Japanese visa, she was not allowed to board her onward flight until Indian officials intervened. Khandu has strongly condemned the incident, stating that it violates international norms and is an affront to the dignity of Indian citizens. He has urged the Ministry of External Affairs to take up the matter urgently to prevent similar incidents in the future. This is not an isolated incident. In recent years, China has made several attempts to lay claim to Arunachal Pradesh, including renaming towns and geographical features in the region. India has consistently rejected these claims, maintaining that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of the country. The Indian government has already taken up the matter with the Chinese side, and the Indian consulate in Shanghai provided assistance to Thongdok during her ordeal. The incident has sparked outrage in India, with many calling for stronger action against China's attempts to undermine India's sovereignty.
