India is reviewing a request from Bangladesh to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death for her alleged role in suppressing student-led protests last year. According to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the request is being examined as part of ongoing legal processes. Bangladesh has demanded Hasina's extradition under a bilateral treaty, citing her conviction by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity. The ICT also sentenced her to life imprisonment, citing her involvement in inciting violence and failing to prevent attacks by law enforcement and Awami League party cadres. Hasina, Bangladesh's longest-serving prime minister, fled to India in August after resigning amid massive protests. She has described the trial as unfair, claiming it was a "rigged tribunal" aimed at discrediting her party. The Bangladeshi government has called for Hasina's immediate extradition, along with former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was also sentenced to death. Kamal is believed to be in Kolkata, India. The extradition request comes amid heightened tensions between India and Bangladesh, with both countries engaging in diplomatic efforts to strengthen their bilateral relationship. National security advisers from both countries recently held talks in Delhi, discussing a range of issues, including regional security and cooperation.
