India Cuts 5.18 Crore Names from Voter Lists in SIR Phase Two

The second phase of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise has concluded, resulting in the removal of 5.18 crore names from electoral rolls across 12 states and union territories.

According to Election Commission data, around 60 lakh dead names have been removed, with the maximum number of names being removed from Uttar Pradesh - 25.47 lakh.

The voter lists now stand at 45.81 crore names, a 10.2 per cent reduction from the previous count.

The remaining 40 crore electors will be covered in the third phase of the exercise, which is expected to begin after the elections in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry have been completed.
