As Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares to visit India, German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann believes the trip presents an opportunity for New Delhi to remind Putin to end the war in Ukraine. In an exclusive interview, Ackermann discussed Germany's support for a closer defense and security partnership between India and the European Union ahead of the January summit. Germany views the US's efforts to broker a lasting peace in Ukraine as a positive development, despite the plan not meeting the expectations of many. Ackermann sees the current peace talks as a 'good sign' but notes that they need to be amended and negotiated. The upcoming India-EU Summit is crucial, with the free trade agreement (FTA) being a game-changer. Ackermann believes it will alter the way Europe views India and influence investments in the country. The FTA, along with defense cooperation, will strengthen the partnership between India and Europe. Regarding the security and defense partnership, Ackermann emphasized that Germany is eager to pursue joint ventures between German and Indian defense companies. He also mentioned the possibility of exporting Indian technology to Germany. The German Chancellor's visit next year is expected to focus on trade, including the FTA and investment protection agreements. Ackermann expressed Germany's interest in increasing trade with India, which currently stands at $50 billion annually. Germany acknowledges the security challenges India faces on its northern borders and encourages closer contacts with neighboring countries. The country also welcomes the Indian private sector's interest in China, given their strong trade link. Germany's Indian diaspora, estimated at 300,000, is considered a success story. The ambassador highlighted the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, including education and job opportunities, while also addressing issues related to migration and agent scams. Overall, Ackermann's comments reflect Germany's commitment to strengthening its partnership with India, focusing on defense, trade, and people-to-people ties.
