India has urged its citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately due to escalating regional tensions and a crackdown on nationwide protests that have claimed over 2,000 lives. The Indian embassy in Tehran issued an advisory warning nationals, including students, businesspeople, pilgrims, and tourists, to depart by available means to avoid an evolving situation. The external affairs ministry in New Delhi also advised against travel to Iran until further notice, citing ongoing developments. Approximately 10,000 Indians reside in Iran, including many students, while thousands of Shia pilgrims from India visit the country annually. The advisories come amidst heightened US-Iran tensions, with US President Donald Trump threatening military intervention if Iranian security forces harm protesters. Trump has also voiced support for the protesters, stating that 'help is on the way' and warned of 'very strong action' if detained protesters are executed. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, discussing the situation in and around Iran, but details remain scarce. The Indian government has faced pressure over its ties with Iran, particularly after Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Tehran. Despite the potential impact being minimal, India-Iran trade accounts for just 0.15% of New Delhi's total trade. The Indian embassy advised nationals to exercise caution, avoid protest areas, and stay informed through local media. While there are no immediate plans to evacuate citizens, authorities are preparing for various contingencies in light of the fluid situation. The protests in Iran began at the Grand Bazaar on December 28, sparked by the Iranian rial's record loss of value. The situation has been exacerbated by US air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last June and ongoing water shortages, power outages, unemployment, and inflation. Iranian authorities claim the situation is under control, with pro-government rallies occurring in the past two days.
