India's Railways has achieved a historic milestone, surpassing the 1 billion-tonne freight loading mark by November 19th. According to the Railway Ministry, the country's rail network carried 1,020 million tonnes of goods this year, with coal being the largest contributor at 505 million tonnes. Other sectors such as iron ore, cement, and fertilizers also saw significant growth. The daily freight loading has remained strong at around 4.4 million tonnes, marking a 10% increase from last year. This is attributed to improved operational efficiency and sustained demand. Compared to the same period last year, freight loading between April and October increased by 2.7% to 935.1 million tonnes. The Railway Ministry has taken steps to optimize the logistics capabilities of the cement sector, including the rollout of reforms such as the Policy for Bulk Cement Terminals and rationalized rates for bulk cement movement. These measures aim to increase bulk handling capacity, reduce transit time, and lower logistics costs. Shifting bulk goods movement to rail has multiple benefits, including reduced carbon footprints, decongested highways, and access to greener logistics solutions for industries, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These developments align with India's commitment to sustainable growth and positioning Railways as a catalyst for both economic and environmental progress.
