A staggering 30% of women in India have experienced intimate partner violence at some point in their lives, according to a recent report by the World Health Organisation (WHO). This disturbing trend is part of a larger global issue, with nearly one in three women worldwide (840 million) having suffered from partner or sexual violence. The report, which covers 168 countries, found that the prevalence of violence against women has barely changed since 2000. The WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, highlighted the urgent need to address this issue. 'Violence against women is one of humanity's oldest and most pervasive injustices, yet it remains one of the least acted upon,' he said. 'Empowering women and girls is not optional, it's a prerequisite for peace, development, and health.' The report noted a worrying decline in funding for initiatives aimed at preventing violence against women. In 2022, only 0.2% of global development aid was allocated to such programs, and funding has decreased further in 2025. The authors of the report urged governments to take decisive action and increase funding for evidence-based prevention programs, as well as strengthen survivor-centered services. The WHO report comes ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls on November 25. As the world marks this important day, it is clear that more needs to be done to address this pressing issue. With nearly 30% of women in India experiencing intimate partner violence, it is essential that we accelerate progress and deliver meaningful change to create a safer world for everyone.
