New Delhi - The Indian government has taken action against dubious firms luring Indian nationals to South-East Asian countries with fake job offers. According to data, over 6,700 Indians have been rescued from Cambodia, Myanmar, and Lao PDR. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh revealed that the government has been aware of these instances and has been working to prevent Indian nationals from falling prey to these scams. The minister stated that Indian nationals are often lured through social media channels and then forced to engage in cybercrime and other fraudulent activities. The exact number of Indians stuck in these countries is unknown, as they often reach these scam centers on their own volition through fraudulent recruitment agents or agencies. However, the government has been actively working with the host countries to rescue and repatriate Indian nationals. According to the data shared by Singh, 2,265 Indians have been rescued from Cambodia, 2,290 from Lao PDR, and 2,165 from Myanmar. The government has established various channels for Indian nationals abroad to seek assistance, including multilingual emergency numbers, WhatsApp numbers, and grievance redressal portals. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also set up the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre to deal with cybercrime in a coordinated manner. The government regularly issues advisories and social media posts to warn job seekers about fake job rackets and advise them to verify the authenticity of recruiting agents and companies before accepting any employment offer.
