India Rushes Aid to Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka, Vows Further Support

India has dispatched critical relief supplies, including food and essential items, to Sri Lanka in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah, which has left a trail of devastation and claimed 56 lives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the people of Sri Lanka, pledging more aid and assistance as the situation unfolds. The cyclone, which made landfall on Sri Lanka's eastern coast, triggered floods and landslides, displacing thousands and straining the country's resources. The Indian warships INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri, which were in Colombo for a naval review, handed over 6.5 tonnes of relief materials, including rations and other essential items. The Indian government's swift response is in line with its 'Neighbourhood First' policy, which emphasizes cooperation and support for its regional neighbors. This gesture is also reflective of India's growing reputation as a first responder in natural disasters and a net security provider in the Indian Ocean region. As the situation in Sri Lanka continues to evolve, the Disaster Management Centre has warned people in low-lying areas to move to higher ground, with a red level flood warning issued for the Kelani River valley. The Indian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka, promising to provide more aid and assistance as needed.
