New Delhi: In a powerful address to mark Constitution Day, Justice Vikram Nath, India's senior-most Supreme Court judge, hailed the Constitution as a 'living promise' that has guided the nation towards justice, pluralism, and equality. Speaking at a function organised by the Supreme Court, Justice Nath emphasized that the Constitution serves as a compass and anchor for India's vast and diverse population. The Constitution Day celebration, observed on November 26, commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. This year, the event saw the participation of President Droupadi Murmu, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, and other prominent figures. Justice Nath's address highlighted the importance of the Constitution as a framework for ensuring the dignity of individuals, unity of the nation, and hope for the evolution of democratic institutions. He noted that the Constitution provides stability to institutions and protection to the weakest members of society, while adapting to new demands and generations. In a call for greater transparency and representation, Supreme Court Bar Association president Vikas Singh urged for measurable goals to be set by 2030 to ensure women's representation in the judiciary. He emphasized the importance of public confidence in the judicial system and the need for trust to be earned through the equality and character of judges. The Attorney General, R Venkataramani, expressed optimism about India's potential to become a global centre for mediation and arbitration regimes, citing the resilience of the Constitution and governance systems in meeting new challenges. The event also saw the participation of Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, and other notable figures. As the nation celebrates Constitution Day, Justice Nath's words serve as a reminder of the Constitution's enduring relevance and promise for a better future.
