RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has expressed concern over the declining use of Indian languages and mother tongues. Speaking at a book release event in Nagpur, Bhagwat appealed to society to reflect on the erosion of linguistic heritage. In his address, Bhagwat noted that India's rich cultural history was once showcased through its languages, but now some people, even Indians, are unaware of their native tongues. He attributed this to the lack of emphasis on speaking Indian languages at home, rather than the English-medium education system. Bhagwat recalled the significance of Indian languages, citing the example of Sant Dnyaneshwar, who translated the Bhagavad Gita into Marathi to make it more accessible to society. He stressed that the limitations of the English language in conveying the depth of Indian concepts and ideas are a reason to preserve and strengthen Indian languages. The RSS chief also highlighted the importance of Indian philosophical traditions, which emphasize unity and the welfare of families and communities. He noted that debates over the Bhagavad Gita's emphasis on knowledge or action overlook its holistic approach, which requires a balance between knowledge and action. Bhagwat's remarks come as a wake-up call for Indians to recognize the value of their linguistic heritage and take steps to preserve it.
