India's Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has dismissed claims that the Sanchar Saathi app is a 'snooping app,' stating that such use is 'not possible.' The app, which must be pre-installed on all mobile devices sold in India, allows users to check their mobile connections, report fraudulent numbers, and trace lost or stolen phones. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) order, issued on November 28, requires mobile phone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on all new devices and update existing ones. However, Minister Scindia clarified on Tuesday that users are free to delete the app if they choose not to use it. Scindia emphasized that the app is a voluntary and democratic system, designed to empower users and protect their privacy. The Sanchar Saathi portal, launched in May 2023, aims to combat cybercrime and provide citizens with a safe online experience. The app's functionalities are not restricted, and users can easily delete it from their phones at any time. Scindia's statement came after digital rights activists and politicians expressed concern over the app's directive, which some feared could not be removed. The minister's clarification aims to alleviate these concerns and reassure users that their privacy is protected.
