Davos [Switzerland] - In a significant development, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw met with top executives from IBM and Meta at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The meeting focused on India's growing importance in the global technology landscape, with a particular emphasis on the country's semiconductor and AI growth. Vaishnaw highlighted India's progress in building a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem, encompassing design, fabrication, packaging, materials, gases, and equipment. He also noted that the global industry views India as a reliable supply-chain partner. The Union Minister's meeting with IBM and Meta CEOs marked a significant step towards strengthening India's semiconductor capabilities, including the development of advanced chip technologies such as 7 nm and 2 nm. This collaboration is expected to boost India's semiconductor talent pool. India's semiconductor ambitions have been gaining momentum, with the government launching initiatives like the Semicon India Programme and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to strengthen the domestic semiconductor ecosystem and supply chain. The country is also seeing significant investments in AI, with Google announcing a massive USD 15 billion investment in an AI hub in Visakhapatnam. The World Economic Forum's 56th Annual Meeting, being held from January 19 to 23, 2026, in Davos-Klosters, has brought together nearly 3,000 participants from over 130 countries to discuss the theme 'A Spirit of Dialogue'. The meeting provides a platform for world leaders, CEOs, innovators, and policymakers to engage in dialogue and explore opportunities for collaboration and growth.
