India's push for 6G technology gained momentum on Tuesday as Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia chaired a key meeting. The government outlined its vision to make India a global leader in 6G by 2030 and set expectations for the next phase of work. The Bharat 6G Mission aims to transform India from a telecom technology follower to a creator, with benefits reaching all citizens, including those in rural areas. The meeting brought together industry leaders, researchers, telecom operators, and members of the Bharat 6G Alliance, a group that fosters collaboration among stakeholders. Scindia emphasized the need for closer collaboration among the seven working groups under the alliance and urged them to set measurable targets. He also highlighted the importance of research and innovation, citing the newly approved ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Fund. To showcase progress in 5G research, Scindia released three booklets detailing the achievements of 100 5G use-case labs set up across higher-education institutes. The labs have been working on experiments, prototype development, and real-world applications. Awards were given to the top-performing labs, with institutions like Punjab Engineering College, Banasthali Vidyapith, and IIT Roorkee recognized for their innovative projects. The government's efforts to develop 6G technology are expected to receive a major boost from the RDI Fund, which will support essential areas such as AI-native networks, semiconductor design, and cybersecurity. The fund is anchored within the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and is expected to drive India's shift from a technology implementer to a creator.
