India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, took a pointed jab at Pakistan during the UN Security Council Open Debate on 'Leadership for Peace.' He criticized Pakistan's treatment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023, and the banning of his political party. Parvathaneni highlighted Pakistan's 'unique way of respecting the will of its people,' which includes jailing a Prime Minister, banning the ruling party, and granting lifetime immunity to the Chief of Defence Forces. He also referenced the country's history of violating the Indus Waters Treaty and sponsoring terrorism. Pakistan has been accused of mistreating Imran Khan in jail, with his ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith raising concerns about his health and jail conditions. The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty was announced after the brutal April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people and was sponsored by Pakistan. Parvathaneni labeled Pakistan a 'global epicentre of terror,' citing the country's history of sponsoring tens of thousands of terror attacks on India, including the recent Pahalgam attack. He emphasized that India has put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold until Pakistan credibly ends its support for terrorism.
