India's ambassador to the United Nations, Harish Parvathaneni, fired back at Pakistan's envoy, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, for peddling a 'false and self-serving account' of Operation Sindoor. The Indian military operation, launched in response to a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in April 2025, targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and left over 100 terrorists dead. Parvathaneni accused Pakistan of having a 'single-point agenda to harm India and its citizens' and criticized Islamabad's response to Operation Sindoor as 'establishing that there can be no "new normal" based on coercion or impunity.' He claimed that Pakistan threatened more attacks on India until May 9, 2025, but then pleaded with the Indian military for a cessation of fighting on May 10. The envoy also took aim at Pakistan's use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy, stating that tolerating such actions is 'not normal' and that the UN cannot become a forum for Islamabad to legitimize terrorism. He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir has always been an integral part of India and asserted that Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on India's internal matters. Parvathaneni also touched on the Indus Waters Treaty, stating that while India entered the treaty in good faith, Pakistan has repeatedly violated its spirit by inflicting wars and terror attacks on India. He advised Pakistan to introspect on its adherence to the rule of law, particularly in light of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which granted lifetime immunity to the country's chief of defense forces, Asim Munir. The exchange between the Indian and Pakistani envoys comes as the UN Security Council debates reaffirming international rule of law and reinvigorating peace, justice, and multilateralism.
