India Unveils Cutting-Edge Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessel INS Mahe to Bolster Coastal Defences

In a significant boost to India's coastal security, the Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mahe, the first of its kind anti-submarine warfare shallow-water craft. The sleek and agile vessel, designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, is part of the Mahe-class, a new generation of indigenous shallow-water combatants. At the commissioning ceremony, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi lauded the Indian Navy's ability to design, construct, and field complex combatants with indigenous technologies. The commissioning of INS Mahe marks a significant milestone in the Navy's transformation into a builder's Navy, capable of sustaining its own combat platforms. The Mahe-class vessels are equipped with advanced sensors, communication systems, and firepower, enabling them to detect, track, and neutralise sub-surface threats with precision. The ship's compact design and technologically advanced machinery make it ideal for prolonged operations in shallow waters. The commissioning of INS Mahe is a testament to India's growing mastery in warship design, construction, and integration, with over 80% indigenous content. The ship's crest features an 'Urumi', symbolising agility, precision, and lethal grace, while its mascot, the Cheetah, embodies speed and focus. General Dwivedi noted that the Indian Navy plays a vital role in neighbourhood and global environments, where the Army's efforts can supplement and complement soft and hard diplomacy. The commissioning of INS Mahe marks a new era in the Navy's ability to ensure near-seas dominance, strengthen coastal security, and safeguard India's maritime interests. The Indian Navy has awarded the Chief of Army Staff Commendation to the Navy personnel who played a key role in the commissioning of the ship, a rare recognition that will become more frequent as synergy among the three forces increases. The commissioning of INS Mahe is a significant step towards bolstering India's coastal defences and cementing its position as a major maritime power.
